About the film
As their relationship comes to a bitter end, Sophie leaves Matt a parting gift, a small device called ALUS. Designed to behave like a mother, ALUS helps Matt with all of his daily needs, teaching him to cook, helping him make money and guiding many of his decisions.
As ALUS accomplishes increasingly complex tasks, Matt sees just how intelligent the little device actually is. He decides to use it in an effort to get Sophie back, but the device disagrees with Matt’s decision. As a “mother,” ALUS wants to protect Matt from hurt, and her algorithm indicates that the relationship will only end in failure, but Matt persists, so ALUS enacts a plan that will give Matt what he wants as well as what he needs.
